LG is ready to mass-produce 17-inch foldable OLED panels. The panels use a tandem OLED structure first introduced in 2019, with two emitting layers stacked on top of each other and separated by a charge generation layer. Two emissive layers made of different organic materials create a wider color gamut and higher brightness.

LG was the first to produce a 13.3-inch foldable notebook OLED in 2020, but the new 17-inch version is more adaptable, with a 3R folding curvature. These monitors feature QHD+ resolution (2560×1920) and are available in 17-inch or 12.3-inch laptop configurations.

Foldable screens are not a technology unique to LG. Previously, Intel launched the “Horseshoe Bend” concept, and Microsoft and Samsung also cooperated to develop folding screen PCs. Lenovo showed off a 13.1-inch foldable Thinkpad, while Intel showed off a 17-inch prototype.

The LG Gram Fold will be launched in South Korea on October 4, priced at 4.99 million won ($2,996). It is equipped with a 17-inch QXGA+ OLED touch screen with an aspect ratio of 4:3, covering 99.5% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and is equipped with Intel’s 13th generation Core processor and LPDDR5 memory. Despite the large screen and 72Wh battery, it weighs only 1,250 grams and the hinge has been tested for 30,000 folds, making it extremely durable.
