Half of the world’s largest 2,000 listed companies have set targets to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century, but only a handful meet the United Nations’ strict guidelines for quality commitments, a report says. The report, from the independent data consortium Net Zero Tracker, covers 1,003 companies, including Forbes 2000 companies, which account for two-thirds of global revenue, equivalent to approximately $27 trillion.

Yet only 4% of company targets meet the criteria set out by the United Nations’ Race to Zero campaign, which include covering all emissions, starting to cut emissions immediately, and providing annual progress updates on medium- and long-term goals.

Among companies that have set targets, only 37% set emissions targets related to the company’s value chain, and only 13% set quality thresholds for the use of carbon offsets.
