Baidu has ordered artificial intelligence chips from Huawei, according to people familiar with the matter, a sign that U.S. pressure could cause Chinese companies to shift their products away from U.S. companies and toward Huawei products. Baidu placed the order in August, before the U.S. government issued stricter chip export restrictions in October.

The order includes 1,600 Huawei Technologies Co.’s 910B Ascend AI chips, with a total value of approximately RMB 450 million (approximately US$61.83 million). Huawei plans to deliver all chips before the end of the year. The order is relatively small but significant because it suggests that some companies may replace products that Baidu has long purchased from Nvidia with products from Huawei.

Baidu, Huawei and Nvidia declined to comment. Analysts believe that U.S. restrictions create opportunities for Huawei to expand in the domestic market because Huawei has made huge technological progress in the chip field despite being subject to U.S. export controls.
