General Motors plans to temporarily halt production of the Cruise Origin truck after it completes production of a small number of pre-commercial self-driving trucks.

Cruise Origin is a model jointly developed by General Motors, Cruise and Honda. Honda plans to launch a service in central Tokyo using dozens of Origin vehicles and later expand to a fleet of 500 vehicles. Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt said at the conference that the company has produced hundreds of Origin vehicles, enough to support current demand, but is suspending production until it is ready to ramp up production again.

Cruise previously faced regulatory directives in California to remove its self-driving cars from the road and had its license to operate in the state suspended, saying self-driving cars posed a risk to the public. The decision affects Cruise’s operations nationwide.
