Intel has suspended investments in plans to expand operations in Vietnam that would have nearly doubled the company’s presence in the country, a setback for the country’s ambitions in the semiconductor industry.

Intel has the world’s largest chip assembly, packaging and testing factory in Vietnam and had planned to expand its production capacity. Although the specific reasons for the shelving of the expansion plan are not clear, sources pointed out that it may involve the stability of the power supply and excessive bureaucracy. Intel had no comment but said Vietnam would continue to play an important role in global manufacturing.

Vietnam has been trying to attract semiconductor manufacturers, with Intel previously announcing large investments in Europe and expanding investment in Malaysia, one of Vietnam’s rivals in Southeast Asia.
