Indonesia has launched the US$100 million Cirata floating solar farm, the largest in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world, to promote green renewable energy.

The project is located in the West Java Reservoir, covering an area of 200 hectares, about 130 kilometers away from Jakarta. It was built in cooperation with Indonesian Power Company and Abu Dhabi Renewable Energy Company Masdar. It took 3 years to build and has a total of 340,000 panels. The initial peak power is 192 megawatts and is expected to be able to power 50,000 households. It is later planned to expand to 500 megawatts and eventually to 1,000 megawatts.

The Indonesian government is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 and the power sector by 2050, and has set a goal of expanding renewable energy to 23% of its energy mix by 2025. Indonesia still relies heavily on fossil fuels for power generation.
