Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is preparing subsidies totaling 2 trillion yen (US$13 billion or RM62.27 billion) to promote investment in its chip industry and restore its status as a semiconductor power.

In addition to unspent chip-related subsidies, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (Meti) is seeking an additional 1.85 trillion yen budget to boost domestic chip manufacturing and security capabilities, while attracting investment in the production of cutting-edge semiconductors that are essential for artificial intelligence (AI). Future technologies such as AI) to self-driving cars are crucial. These include billions of dollars to support Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), an industry leader in advanced chip production, and local startup Rapidus Corp, which aims to compete in high-end chip production.

Rapidus is working to build a Japanese chip foundry that can compete with companies such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics to achieve edge foundry by 2027, with the goal of strengthening the Japanese economy by ensuring stable supply.
