Meta Platforms has struck a deal with Tencent Holdings to sell a new low-cost virtual reality (VR) headset in China.

According to sources, the preliminary agreement will make Tencent the exclusive seller of Meta headphones in China, starting sales of the headphones by the end of 2024. This gives Meta an opportunity to return to the Chinese market and compete with Pico, a VR headset produced by ByteDance.

Meta launched its next-generation mixed reality headset, the Quest 3, earlier this year. According to the Wall Street Journal, in China Meta plans to use cheaper lenses in the headset than the Quest 3. This version will be available in other markets as well.

Meta and Tencent did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
