The National Irrigation Authority (NIA) and New Canaan Energy Corporation are partnering to develop a solar-powered irrigation system in the Philippines.

NIA Acting Administrator Engineer Eddie Guillen and New Canaan Energy Corporation President Alfonso Gillego led the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the development of a canal-top solar power system at the NIA Agno River Integrated Irrigation System in Rosales, Pangasinan.

The partnership aims to develop a solar power plant for utility-scale electricity generation using the canal top and Agno River integrated irrigation system for sustainable operations. A total of 101 irrigators associations and 24,298 farmers and their families are expected to benefit from the project.

NIA is an agency under the Department of Agriculture that aims to fully utilize the potential of its irrigation systems as multi-purpose water resources throughout the Philippines. It is designed to provide irrigation systems for power generation, flood control, domestic water supply, agritourism and aquaculture.
