Singapore’s Changi Airport is testing an artificial intelligence system that uses machine learning and X-ray image analysis to cut passenger security screening time in half.

The system, which is used in Terminal 3, reduces the time it takes to process X-ray images of carry-on baggage at the gate and reduces the potential for human error. Preliminary results show that the new system performs well at marking prohibited items, even surpassing human safety inspectors.

This development, which aims to increase the level of automation, is significant for the expected rebound of passenger numbers to pre-pandemic levels next year.

Singapore is also building a fifth airport terminal and plans to work with the Johor high-speed rail project in southern Malaysia.
