50 oil and gas companies pledged to reduce operational emissions

At the UN’s COP28 climate talks, 50 oil and gas companies, which account for 40% of global production, pledged to decarbonize their operations by 2050.

Twenty-nine companies, including Aramco, have signed a non-binding agreement to achieve zero methane emissions and eliminate flaring within a decade. Aramco and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company have announced emission reduction targets that do not include emissions from customer fuel use.

PetroChina, Petrobras and others signed the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter.

Despite being seen as positive, nonprofits argue that these voluntary commitments are not enough to address climate change and that governments need to adopt policies to move the economy away from fossil fuels.
