IBM demonstrated a new quantum computing chip and machine expected to become the building blocks of large-scale systems of the future. The technical challenge is to create quantum computers that are reliable enough to outperform traditional silicon computers.

IBM has demonstrated new ways of solving the problem of data errors by connecting chips and introducing new error-correcting codes as it plans to launch compelling quantum machines by 2033. The first machine to use this technology is Quantum System 2, which uses three “Heron” chips.

IBM said progress will be relatively stable until error correction technology takes full effect in 2029, after which machine performance will increase rapidly.

Companies such as PsiQuantum are also racing to develop quantum machines, with plans to launch commercial machines within a few years.
