Smartphone sales rebound in second half of 2023

Trendforce reports show that global smartphone production increased by 13% quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter, reaching 308 million units, ending eight quarters of year-on-year decline. It is expected to grow again by 5-10% in the fourth quarter, and the decline in annual output will be limited to 3%, reaching 1.16 billion units.

Samsung continues to lead, with output increasing by 11.5% in the third quarter to 60.1 million units. However, affected by economic uncertainty, the gap ahead of Apple narrowed to 5 million units throughout the year.

Apple’s third-quarter production increased by 17.9% to 49.5 million units, but due to the impact of initial component production, market share fell by 1.5% from last year. ​

Huawei has recovered in China’s high-end market and become a strong competitor to Apple. Xiaomi’s third-quarter output surged 22.3% to 42.8 million units, and Transsion surpassed Vivo to rank fifth globally. Vivo production increased by 6.5% to 24.5 million units.
