Fiat has opened its first car manufacturing plant in Oran, Algeria, which is expected to revitalize the local automotive market. The move is the first manufacturing plant in Algeria since 2019, when imports of cars were halted and assembly plants were closed.

Algeria’s Minister of Industry said Fiat is the first locally-made brand due to its popularity, with an investment of 200 million euros in the 40-hectare plant, which aims to create 1,200 jobs by 2026. The plant is seen as the starting point for the Algerian automotive industry, with more projects to be launched in the future.

The deputy minister of business said that cars produced in Algeria will include hybrid models to combat climate change.
