Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States released a report proposing that by the middle of this century, the United States can remove 1 billion tons of carbon from the atmosphere every year through existing technologies.

According to the report, biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS) accounts for about 70% of the U.S. carbon removal potential, with an investment of $130 billion. BiCRS involves the collection of municipal and forestry waste for the production of products such as hydrogen, biogas and charcoal. While science has addressed the BiCRS problem, funding is lacking.

Achieving the 1 billion tonnes carbon elimination goal could be as low as 0.5% of U.S. GDP, or even less than the annual expenditure on solid waste management. The development of the carbon removal industry could create more than 440,000 new jobs.
