Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade has proposed building a new transmission line to Laos to increase energy supplies, especially during the dry season. This will help ensure energy security in northern Vietnam, as no new large power plants will come online before 2025.

Vietnam currently imports 3,000 megawatts of electricity from Laos via a 220-kilowatt line. Vietnam Electricity Company has started laying a 45-kilometer 500-kilowatt line to connect the two countries and is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Vietnam signed an agreement with Laos in 2019 and plans to purchase 3,000 MW by 2025 and 5,000 MW annually thereafter.

In the first 11 months of this year, Vietnam’s imported electricity accounted for 1.5% of the total electricity supply.
