Scottish adventurers Chris and Julie Ramsey successfully completed a nine-month, 17,000-mile polar electric vehicle expedition to cross the magnetic north pole to the south pole for the first time with a Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE electric car.

The vehicle was modified by Icelandic Arctic Trucks and is equipped with 39-inch tires and anti-icing equipment. Due to the extra load, the range dropped by 150-200 miles, but the couple learned the trick of keeping the battery warm at the poles. Charging with a 5kW wind turbine or solar hybrid charging solution, sometimes relying on a gasoline generator.

Their challenge is to demonstrate that electric vehicles are an alternative to diesel expedition vehicles, and the Enel X Way charging solution provides support on Central and South American routes.

This isn’t the Ramseys’ first foray into electric vehicle challenges, as they completed the Rally Mongolia in 2017.
