British Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the UK could see self-driving cars on some roads by 2026. Although current UK law does not allow cars with fully autonomous technology, the government is considering an autonomous vehicle bill in Parliament and is expected to develop a legal framework by the end of 2024.

Harper pointed out that 2026 may see the launch of some cars with fully autonomous driving capabilities, emphasizing that this will be a gradual process. Critics of the technology worry it could lead to traffic accidents, but Harper said the technology has the potential to improve road safety. The new bill plans to make manufacturers, rather than owners, legally responsible for self-driving car accidents in an effort to boost industry safety.
