Chinese automaker BYD has become the first Chinese automaker to obtain a test license for conditional autonomous driving (Level 3) on high-speed roads in Shenzhen on July 21.

BYD said that to obtain the L3 test license, it needs to pass the autonomous driving function test of a nationally recognized institution, and conduct an expert review, considering factors such as traffic safety and road opening.

Level 3 represents an important watershed in the level of intelligent driving of the car, and some functional decisions can be made under limited conditions. BYD emphasizes that in order to achieve fully autonomous driving, it needs to reach Level 5, which is still an early concept.
