In 2023, the United States became the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first time, with shipments reaching 91.2 million tons, surpassing Australia and Qatar.

The production expansion was aided by the restart of Texas-based Freeport LNG, setting a U.S. record. Qatar’s lower sales have caused it to drop from the world’s largest LNG supplier to third place. Australia ranks second, with relatively stable export volume.

Two new liquefied natural gas projects in the United States are about to come into operation in 2024, the Venture Global LNG Inc Plaquemines plant in Louisiana and the Golden Pass plant in Texas, which are expected to increase production by 38 million tons per year.
