Apple has agreed to settle a lawsuit alleging that it knowingly allowed scammers to take advantage of gift cards. The terms of the settlement have been agreed upon, and a formal proposal is being drafted for preliminary approval.

The lawsuit accuses Apple of knowingly allowing fraudsters to scam victims over the phone to buy gift cards, be told to pay various fees, and then share the code on the back of the card. Apple usually deposits 70% of the funds into the %的资金存入欺诈者账户,保留30% as its own “commission” to exchange the stolen code into dollars.

The indictment says victims could lose “hundreds of millions of dollars” and covers individuals who purchased gift cards between 2015 and July 31, 2020, but did not receive a refund. The trial judge has rejected Apple’s request for dismissal, arguing that its attempt to deny responsibility is unreasonable.
