The European Union’s competition watchdog is investigating Microsoft’s investment in ChatGPT developer OpenAI to determine whether it complies with EU merger rules.

The European Commission said it was examining whether the investment needed a review, aiming to ensure regulation keeps pace with developments in artificial intelligence and prevent major players from excluding competitors.

EU competition chief Vestager will meet with tech company executives to focus on artificial intelligence partnerships to prevent market distortions. Microsoft pledged to invest $13 billion in OpenAI last year, attracting regulatory attention.

The UK competition watchdog is also investigating whether the Microsoft-OpenAI partnership is akin to a merger.
