Apple plans to shut down its AI team in San Diego, involving 121 employees, forcing them to risk firing.

According to anonymous people familiar with the matter, the team called Data Operations Annotations will move to Austin and merge with some teams in Texas. Employees have until the end of February to decide whether or not to relocate, or they will be laid off on April 26.

Apple said the decision was to bring the data team together in Austin and promised to give every employee the opportunity to be in Austin. The decision came as a surprise to San Diego employees, with most expressing reluctance to relocate.

Apple offers relocation allowances and severance compensation, but it could lead to dozens of employees leaving.
