Panasonic will produce upgraded EV batteries as early as 2024

Panasonic plans to launch the latest generation of 2170 EV batteries with increased capacity at its Nevada plant in 2024 or 2025.

Chief Technology Officer Shoichiro Watanabe said the improved version is designed to increase the energy density of the 2170 battery to reduce the overall cost of electric vehicles. Panasonic plans to quadruple its production capacity for 2170 batteries by FY2030. The company is also developing 4680 cells and has committed to increasing cell capacity to 200 GWh from the current 50 GWh.

Panasonic plans to improve and expand production in North America and include a new battery plant in its goals. The company expects operating income to increase by 85 billion yen in fiscal 2024.
