Google confirmed it will eliminate hundreds of positions in its global advertising team to increase efficiency and creativity through artificial intelligence. The layoffs are mainly targeted at the large account sales team and are intended to better support small and medium-sized advertising.

Google plans to compensate by increasing the size of its small business advertising team. Google recently launched its cloud computing arm’s artificial intelligence tools to help retailers personalize online shopping and optimize operations. The company points out that 80% of U.S. retailers urgently need to adopt generative AI.

Google said the new AI tools include virtual agents, product image analysis and online search optimization. This is a major move by Google after investing in generative artificial intelligence over the past year.
