TSMC plans to open a new chip foundry on the Japanese island of Kyushu on Feb. 24, which will use 12 and 16nm as well as 28 and 22nm process technologies. The Japanese government plans to invest $13 billion to promote domestic production of strategic semiconductors and artificial intelligence technologies.

However, TSMC’s plans for a second factory in the U.S. will be postponed to 2027 or 2028, with mass production of N4 technology originally planned for the first half of 2025. TSMC explains that worker shortages and skills issues have led to slow progress at the Arizona factory. The company plans to build Europe’s first manufacturing plant in Germany, which is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.
