BMW has signed its first agreement to use “humanoid” robots in its factories. Designed by California-based robotics company FigureAI, the bipedal robot named “Figure 01” is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds, has five fingers, and is described as a general-purpose robot that can perform a variety of physical tasks.

BMW claims the robots will focus on difficult, unsafe or tedious tasks, increasing productivity, reducing costs and creating a safer, more consistent environment. As part of the first phase of the agreement, the two companies will identify initial use cases for deploying Figure robots in automotive production. The partnership means robots will support every aspect of luxury car manufacturing.
