Japan’s exports rose nearly 10% year-on-year in December, benefiting from the recovery of trade with China and strong demand for automobiles, machinery and computer chips.

The recovery in Chinese demand drove a 10% increase in exports. The surge in tourists has also been a driving factor, with the number of tourists being included in trade statistics.

While contributing significantly to Q4 GDP growth, export growth is expected to be weak looking ahead.
