South Korea has lifted the ban on delivery robots driving on sidewalks, pushing forward the solution to the last-mile delivery problem.

Under the new regulations, compliant robots can operate on sidewalks, prompting their commercialization. The robots need to meet a series of standards, such as a weight not exceeding 500 kilograms, a width not exceeding 80 centimeters, and a speed not exceeding 15 kilometers per hour.

Companies such as Woowa Brothers have piloted delivery robot services in specific areas. Among them, the Dilly Drive robot can cross crosswalks, ride in elevators, and deliver food to customers’ apartments.

The move is seen as a future solution to rising labor costs and could reduce retail and delivery costs.
