According to people familiar with the matter, SpaceX’s plan to provide Starlink satellite communication services to Vietnam has been put on hold, leading to the suspension of technical support negotiations to support the Vietnam Coast Guard.

Vietnam plans to upgrade its internet infrastructure, especially after the recent disruption of underwater fiber optic cables. Negotiations between the two sides reached an impasse in late 2023 because Vietnamese lawmakers were unwilling to relax ownership restrictions on foreign companies. It’s unclear whether negotiations will continue, and SpaceX and Vietnam’s Ministry of Information declined to comment.

The Vietnamese government has added specific requirements for satellite service providers in terms of local data storage and data traffic control. Although SpaceX has long discussed military technical services with Vietnam, no consensus has been reached.
