According to The Register, Lenovo will engage in formal sales of used computers and servers. This new initiative is called “Lenovo Certified Refurbished”: it is expected to help customers save money on device purchases and reduce negative environmental impact.

All equipment will be refurbished and repaired before resale. It involves deleting data, replacing and updating components when necessary. Rigorous testing will then be carried out to ensure it meets “high standards of quality and functionality”.

Lenovo says only “best-in-class” Lenovo PCs and servers will be selected for the Lenovo Certified Refurbished program. The company will offer them a standard one-year warranty, with the possibility of extending it to three years. All computers support Windows 11. Whenever possible, Lenovo will use original (refurbished) packaging to help reduce waste.

For servers, there are three levels of quality assessment for refurbished equipment: “Excellent,” “Excellent,” and “Good.” In all cases, it is selling fully functional equipment. Furthermore, in the first case there are virtually no cosmetic defects, in the second case there are slight signs of use, and in the third case there are obvious cosmetic defects.

The company cited several key benefits of the Lenovo Certified Refurbished program. These include the ability to manage IT carbon footprint, extend device lifecycle, reduce e-waste, promote resource conservation, cost savings and lower total cost of ownership.

It is expected that only Lenovo itself and approved partners will be able to sell certified refurbished devices. The program will initially launch in the UK, Denmark, France and Germany, with plans to roll out globally later.
