Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said on Friday (March 1) that under some definitions, general artificial intelligence could be achieved in as little as five years.

Jensen Huang, who heads the world’s leading maker of artificial intelligence chips used to create systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, answered a question at an economic forum at Stanford University about how long it would take to achieve one of Silicon Valley’s long-term goals. . Create computers that can think like humans.

The answer depends largely on how the goal is defined, Huang said. If defined by the ability to pass human testing, artificial general intelligence (AGI) will soon arrive, Huang said.

Until now, AI can pass tests such as the bar exam, but still struggles in specialized medical tests such as gastroenterology. But Huang said he should be able to pass any of them within five years.

Huang also raised the question of how many more chip factories, known in the industry as “fabs,” will be needed to support the expansion of the artificial intelligence industry. Media reports say OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes more fabs are needed.
