French lawmakers have proposed fining ultra-fast fashion brands such as China’s Shein up to 50% of the selling price of clothing, aiming to offset their impact on the environment.

They point out that these brands launch thousands of new products every day, causing overconsumption and pollution. France’s environment minister plans to ban such companies from advertising and introduce financial incentives to make sustainable fashion more competitive.

Shein responded by following sustainable development practices. The bill, due to be introduced in parliament in late March, aims to punish fast fashion companies that are rapidly disrupting the retail industry.
