SpaceX’s Starlink unit has achieved a major breakthrough in satellite direct-to-cell phone service, achieving peak download speeds of 17Mbps using an unmodified Samsung phone. This marks the fastest speed for a smartphone to connect directly via satellite, without the need for special hardware.

Test results show that the Galaxy S21 Ultra can achieve this speed, demonstrating Starlink’s ability to provide new satellite communications services using existing commercial satellites and consumer devices. While the speed is sufficient for basic calls, it may still be a challenge for use cases like video calls.

Yet even slow satellite connections can serve as backup means of communication in remote areas. The technology is expected to grow further as other OEMs commit to integrating direct satellite connectivity into future devices.
