IBM is conducting a round of global personnel adjustments, called “resource operations,” to deal with the company’s restructuring and financial pressures and avoid directly calling them layoffs.

It is said that the reduction target may be as high as 80%, and the European region will be hit hard. Employees are asked to voluntarily resign, which mainly affects departments such as human resources. About 1/3 of the layoffs will be carried out in Slovakia and the other part in Hungary.

Target cuts include CIO, procurement, marketing, communications and human resources positions. IBM plans to save billions of dollars in operating costs over the next few years.
