Google’s mobile operating system Android 15 will reportedly include satellite connectivity for text message transmission.

Android Authority spotted hints of this feature in the latest Android 14 beta. Users with qualifying mobile accounts may soon be able to send and receive text messages via satellite, with the feature being selectable via a button, the beta shows.

Although the page doesn’t specify a provider, T-Mobile may be involved, having previously worked with SpaceX to improve connectivity in cellular dead zones. The feature appears to be usable for regular communications and emergencies, but there may be delivery delays and limited coverage in some areas, with weather and physical obstructions affecting signal quality.

Google is also preparing a “Satellite SOS” feature that may work with Garmin Response, but details have not yet been confirmed.
