According to Bloomberg, Nissan confirmed that a data breach that occurred on December 5, 2023 affected a total of 100,000 customers, employees, and dealers. Approximately 10% of the affected personal data may have been compromised, including driver’s licenses, passports, tax identification numbers and health insurance cards.

The incident affected Nissan and financial services companies in Australia and New Zealand, with ransomware group Akira claiming responsibility and threatening to release the stolen material. Nissan will notify affected individuals of the cyber intrusion and provide free identity theft and credit services, while strengthening cybersecurity measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

As technology integration in automotive information systems continues to increase, cybersecurity has become a focus for automakers.
