China is rapidly advancing the construction of “green” hydrogen infrastructure, aiming to stay ahead of Western countries.

The authorities of Ulanqab City, Inner Mongolia, approved Sinopec’s 20.5 billion yuan green hydrogen investment project, which will produce 100,000 tons of green hydrogen. China also plans to build more green hydrogen production bases in inland areas to harness renewable energy.

The central government has positioned hydrogen energy as a strategic emerging industry and plans to produce 100,000-200,000 tons per year by 2025. Local governments responded to the call, and at least 24 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions announced hydrogen energy development plans.

Meanwhile, the United States and Europe are also ramping up green hydrogen production plans but face challenges from the renewable energy industry.
