France’s competition watchdog announced today that it has fined Google 250 million euros for its artificial intelligence services that violated EU intellectual property rules in its relationships with publishers.

Regulators noted that Google failed to notify publishers that its artificial intelligence chatbot was trained on content. Google has agreed to a settlement, but regulators say it failed to meet four commitments in the settlement, including negotiating honestly with publishers and providing transparent information. The fine relates to a copyright dispute involving French online content.

The regulator singled out Google’s failure to notify publishers about the training of its artificial intelligence chatbot, arguing that this hampered negotiations on fair pricing.
