The Philippines plans to build 200 more seaports with a total value of 12.5 billion pesos by 2028 to improve connectivity of remote islands and strengthen the economy and disaster resilience. These small ports will serve fishing vessels and ro-ro vessels.

Elmer Sarmiento, undersecretary for maritime transport, said the ports were intended to boost economic growth on remote islands and improve disaster resilience. He noted that these ports are critical for disaster relief activities. The Philippines plans to obtain financing from the Department of Budget and Management to launch these projects.

Sarmiento noted that since 2015, the Department of Transportation has completed 250 port projects to build a strong and reliable Philippine merchant fleet. According to the Philippine Ports Authority report, the passenger volume of marine terminals surged from 59.19 million passengers previously to 73.61 million passengers in 2023, and cargo throughput also increased.
