India’s hydroelectric power generation has fallen at its fastest pace for a year in a row, as erratic rains boost demand and increase coal-fired power generation, according to a Reuters analysis of government data. Clean energy decreased by 16.3%, and the share of renewable energy fell for the first time since 2015.

Experts say reservoirs are low and hydropower generation may continue to decline before the monsoon. India has failed to meet its 175GW renewable energy target and its reliance on coal has hit a five-year high. Ember data shows that global hydropower production has fallen for the fourth time since 2000, with India declining at a rate seven times the global average.
