Japan will provide up to $3.9 billion in new subsidies to semiconductor company Rapidus in an effort to re-establish itself as a major player in the chip industry.

Japan is competing with the United States and Europe to lure chipmakers with huge subsidies. Rapidus plans to mass-produce 2nm logic chips in Japan starting in 2027. The Japanese government says the project is crucial to improving the competitiveness of the entire industry.

In addition, Japan has also pledged to increase domestic chip sales by providing 4 trillion yen in state funds. Despite plans to build new factories, there are concerns about whether Japan has enough labor.
