Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is in the United States for a week-long visit to strengthen U.S.-Japan relations.

Google parent company Alphabet announced that it will invest US$1 billion to build two new undersea cables to enhance digital connections between the United States and Japan.

The cables will connect the United States, Japan and Pacific Island nations, including the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, enhancing digital connectivity in the region and increasing network reliability and resilience.

The move also reflects the U.S. and Japan’s willingness to work together to defend against other countries’ influence in the region.
