Toyota Motor has restructured its group and taken back Daihatsu’s dominance in the development of ASEAN models. This may affect some of Perodua’s future new models.

Last year, Daihatsu was exposed to scandals involving fraud in crash tests on many models, affecting popular models in Japan and Southeast Asia. In order to prevent similar incidents from happening again, Toyota Group decided to take back the leadership of Daihatsu Motor’s research and development. Toyota will also be responsible for future models developed in cooperation with Perodua.

This move also accompanied the renaming of two subsidiaries responsible for R&D and production business in Southeast Asia, becoming the R&D and production headquarters for Southeast Asia.
