EU says Apple’s iPad operating system will face stricter rules

The European Union requires Apple’s iPad operating system to comply with strict new rules, classifying it as a “core” service under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This has forced Apple to revise its business approach and encourage competition among online platforms.

This is another Apple product joining the DMA network after the iPhone’s iOS, App Store and Safari browser. The DMA stipulates that digital companies and “gatekeepers” must comply with a series of rules, such as allowing interoperability with rival communication services.

The European Commission said that Apple locks users into the iPad operating system and prevents users from switching to other tablet operating systems, which is a restriction for users and business users. Apple has six months to comply with the DMA regulations.
