The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined AT&T and other large U.S. carriers nearly $200 million for illegally sharing customer location data.
In the filing, the FCC alleged that these carriers shared sensitive location data without customers’ consent. Among them, T-Mobile and AT&T have the highest fines, reaching US$80 million and US$57 million respectively. Verizon faces nearly $47 million in fines.
The operator has not said whether it will appeal the decision. Reports say Verizon plans to appeal, and AT&T said it would conduct an appeal after conducting a legal review. The FCC said the carrier violated regulations by failing to protect customer data and selling the information without obtaining adequate consent.
