The Biden administration plans to provide billions of dollars in subsidies to semiconductor companies such as Intel and TSMC in the coming weeks to support the construction of new factories in the United States.

The move aims to boost the production of advanced semiconductors, including smartphones, artificial intelligence and weapon systems. Announcements are expected by March 7, with Intel’s projects in Arizona, Ohio, New Mexico and Oregon costing more than $43.5 billion. TSMC has two factories near Phoenix, with a total investment of $40 billion.

Other contenders include South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, Micron Technology, Texas Instruments and GLOBALFOUNDRIES. The program is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s funding for semiconductor chips.
