The Philippine Department of Agriculture plans to invest at least 5 billion pesos every year to build solar irrigation systems (SPIS) nationwide to increase rice production and cope with the El Niño phenomenon.

The department will prioritize small-scale solar irrigation systems, and annual allocations will be used to build 500 to 1,000 units, covering state financing and official development assistance. The move is aimed at solving agricultural problems caused by prolonged drought.

President Marcos plans to irrigate 180,000 hectares of rice fields through SPIS, which is expected to increase rice production by 1.2 million tons.

Former Agriculture Minister Piñol praised the construction of SPIS for its important role in increasing rice production.
