OpenAI forms new team to study child safety

OpenAI has launched a new team, with oversight from activists and parents, to study how to prevent artificial intelligence tools from being misused or abused by children.

The team will work with internal and external partners to manage processes, incidents and reviews related to underage users. Given the increasing use of AI by children, OpenAI hired child safety experts and partnered with Common Sense Media to develop child-friendly AI guidelines. Despite the potential benefits of AI in solving academic and personal problems, there are also risks of misuse.

UNESCO therefore urges governments to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in education to ensure public participation, data protection and user privacy.
