Mexico overtook China last year for the first time as the leading source of U.S. imports, a sign of growing tensions between Washington and Beijing. This reflects the United States’ efforts to import goods from countries that are friendlier and closer to home.

Data show that the value of U.S. imports from Mexico increased by nearly 5% from 2022 to 2023, reaching more than $475 billion, while China’s imports fell by 20% to $427 billion. The shift reflects U.S. businesses’ wariness of China’s economic policies
